Ontur, Southern Spain - Site Information

This is not a site where one can expect to make first time 300, 500, 750 or 1000km flight during your first few days. It requires a period of acclimatization and exploration to be able to fulfill its real potential ....and yours ! The Copa de Castilla held for the first time in 1998 in Ontur welcomed world class pilots from Germany, Italy, England, France and Spain. They experienced wave, ridge, thermal and convergence lift during one short week in September with speeds of up to 120kph. Their overall impression was one of exciting and diverse conditions, and friendly locals.

The site is especially suited to pilots looking to extend their soaring season, March/April and September/October soaring is quite worthy of the journey. It is also a site with many different types of soaring - ridge, wave, thermal and sea breeze - so it is a challenging opportunity for pilots looking for something different and stimulating. Your level of experience is not important, just your sense of adventure!

The local area is primarily dependent on farming and is quite sparsely populated. The local wine and especially olive oil are some of the best in Spain. In the small local towns there are numerous bars which serve simple but adequate meals and excellent Tapas. Visits to the local gorges and lakes, either by air or car are recommended. Horse or bicycle exploration of the local countryside reveals a rugged but fertile area - one can imagine the Spanish folk hero Don Quixote in this land!
