Ontur is a small town, 1.5 hours drive inland from Alicante and situated in the arid countryside of the Castilla La Mancha region. The European Soaring Club has flown from Ontur for the past eight years, experiencing the diversity and challenge that this region offers with cloudbases up to 17,000ft, wave, ridge flying and the spectacular convergences for which Spain is becoming well known.
The terrain is a mix of flatlands to the north and north west, small 'razor-backed' ridges locally and 6-7,000ft mountainous areas in the west and north east. This diverse terrain is what gives us the exciting range of conditions enabling members of all levels to enjoy new experiences.
With a fleet of gliders from Duo Discus, LS8, Pegasus and three LS4's , the site and facilities suit pilots of all levels of experience. The British Team Training has been held in Ontur for seven years during April with good cross country conditions to provide an excellent training ground for the British Teams. The weather in this part of Spain is extremely reliable, usually with less than 9 non-flying days in the last few seasons with many 500km & 300km flights, Gold Height flights in thermals and many of our new members achieving their Silver 'C' legs on their first visit.
